German media company Axel Springer has agreed to purchase the Telegraph Media Group (TMG) in a deal worth £575 million. The acquisition surpasses a previously proposed £500 million bid from Daily Mail and General Trust, which had been under review by the government due to concerns about competition and media plurality.
Telegraph Media Group owns several prominent titles, including the Daily Telegraph, Sunday Telegraph, Telegraph Magazine, and its digital platforms. Axel Springer said the purchase represents a major opportunity to strengthen the brand while maintaining its long-standing reputation within British journalism.
Chief executive Mathias Döpfner said the company intends to invest in the growth and development of the Telegraph’s operations. Plans include expanding its international reach, particularly within the United States, while supporting the organisation’s editorial independence and established identity. The acquisition will become Axel Springer’s largest media purchase to date.
The Telegraph has effectively been without a long-term owner since 2023 after the Barclay family, its previous owners, fell behind on loans secured against the company. Lloyds Banking Group subsequently took control of the business. Several attempts to acquire the group have since failed, including bids from investment firm RedBird Capital and publisher Daily Mail and General Trust, both of which faced regulatory scrutiny before the deals collapsed.
