Londoners are facing major travel disruption this week after a widespread strike by Underground staff shut down almost all Tube services. Members of the RMT union began industrial action on Sunday in an ongoing dispute over pay, conditions and working hours. The strike is expected to cause severe delays across the capital until Thursday, with limited services resuming by Friday.
Most Underground lines have been suspended, forcing thousands of commuters onto alternative routes. Buses, the Elizabeth line and the Overground are operating, but with far higher demand than usual, long queues have been forming outside major stations. Many passengers have opted to walk or cycle to work, with heavy footfall across key bridges and central London roads.
The disruption is rippling into wider city life. Major events have been rescheduled, including Coldplay’s Wembley shows and Post Malone’s performances at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Businesses, theatres, pubs and restaurants are reporting significant drops in trade, with the Night Time Industries Association warning losses could reach £150m over the course of the week.
The Mayor of London has urged both TfL and the RMT to reach an agreement quickly, stressing the impact on workers, families and the wider economy. In the meantime, commuters are advised to check live updates and plan their journeys carefully.
